STU Survival Guide

Money

Where are the best part-time jobs?

  • Working at a bar is good. I get to see my friends and get paid.
  • Bellhops at hotels, make good tips.
  • Lot of jobs on campus: Student Affairs, Students Union, tutoring.
  • Call Centres.
  • I can't seem to budget work and school and friends. I just can't do it.

How to stick to a budget?

  • Avoid VLTs. Nine out of 10 times you're gonna lose.
  • Be cheap. Very, very cheap. Only buy what you need. And write down everything you buy so you can see the numbers.
  • Don't eat out every night.
  • You don't know how much you're spending 'til it's gone.
  • Leave your bank card at home. Then you've only got what's in your pocket.
  • Get a Bank of Montreal card. You'll avoid the $1.50 surcharge.
  • I have a few drinks before going out to the bar to save money.

How to keep track of your money at the bar?

  • Only take a certain amount. When it's gone, it's gone.
  • Separate cab money from drinking money and don't take your debit card.
